What Is Secondlife?
Secondlife is a virtual platform that has been around for thirteen years.  Phillip Rosedale, founder and former CEO of Linden Labs, created Secondlife.  Secondlife (SL) started out as a shooter game and over the years has evolved into a virtual community.  Avatars in the online platform represent people.  People can design and modify their avatars to fit what they want.

Money
Entrepreneurial activity occurs daily in Secondlife.  Over $3.2 billion in transactions for good has been recorded.  Some people have made a living from making and selling goods on Secondlife.  Items that are sold are virtual items for avatars.  Clothing, household items, houses, land, pets and modifications for your avatars are among the items for sale.

Teens
Secondlife once had a Teen Island or Teen Grid that started in 2005.  Only people under 18 could be in the area.  Secondlife separated the adults from the teens.  Adults often complained about the teens on the Main Grid.  Adults could not access  the Teen Grid.  Teachers used the Teen Grid for education purposes and they were the only adults allowed access.

The Teen Grid was not successful and closed in 2011. Education did not use Teen SL as intended.  Teens were just silly and mean in the virtual community.  Education implementations of SecondLife could have been great.  Some schools set up Islands for their students.  There they could access online information and discuss assignments with each other without being in the same room.

What Teen SL Did
Teen Secondlife allowed students 18 and over to move their avatars to the Main Grid.  Teens are sneaky and after Teen SL closed, they used their parent’s information to stay on Secondlife.  Just like any online forum, you must be careful who is on the other end of the computer keyboard.  You never know if it is an adult, child, man or woman.

Personal Information
Personal information should never be shared with anyone online.
Not sharing personal information is a simple rule everyone should follow.  Our young people are guilty of sharing personal information with everyone.  There are plenty of predators seeking these young people.  Parents need to be aware of what their children are doing online.

What Can You Do
Secondlife has great attributes!  People can visit other countries, museums, gardens and even spaceports.  There are several games you can play on the Main Grid.  Secondlife is not a game itself, it is a virtual community.  As an avatar, you can own a house, put stuff in your house or visit places.  I have seen some strange things on the grid and I choose to stay away from those areas.
